A few years ago, my main motivation for rehabbing post baby would have been to get back to running as quickly as possible! This time around I have an added motivation, needing be strong and healthy enough to survive life with a three-year-old boy! 🤣 The first time I was able to lift Joshua in and out of a shopping cart postpartum, he exclaimed “you did it mama! You lifted me up!” and it was the sweetest motivation in the world.

I started 2 weeks postpartum with gentle mobility movements and reconnecting to my core and pelvic floor with breath work. At 4-6 weeks pp I progressed to rebuilding and strengthening exercises in preparation for return to more high impact movements like my warmup routine, skips and dribbles. (The main metrics I was told to use are to not feel any pain or pelvic floor pressure before progressing to either a more challenging exercise or more reps.) Next up I’ll try out some running!

It’s been great to utilize the knowledge of DPT @strongcoremama programs along the way! A great tool I recommend for anyone who wants to start moving again post baby in a healing, healthy and safe way! Check her out ☺️🙌

So thrilled to be welcoming baby #2 at the end of August!!

I’ve heard each pregnancy is different, and that is definitely the case for me!! The biggest difference is that although I’m definitely slowing down, walking more and running less days per week I’ve been able to stay running longer this pregnancy which has been fun 🏃‍♀️ Currently at week 30 and wondering how much longer that will be the case! The difficulty getting shoes on, heartburn, frequent bathroom breaks and labored breathing are the same though 😂

I’ve always believed that for mastery and excellence the activity itself has to be the reward apart from an outcome. As I’ve progressed through my running career sometimes this has been the case, and sometimes it hasn’t. Over the years, more and more focus on the outcome as the most important thing took a lot of joy out of the process! Trail running has been a huge gift! It’s allowed me freedom to try new hard things, be challenged in new ways, and come back to what my values are in running and life. Because running is just a huge playground for life lessons and figuring out how to push limits and grow at the end of the day anyways right?!

As someone who has always raced shorter distances, I think I’m hooked on these longer races! Thanks to meeting with @the_trail_team this fall, I even felt somewhat prepared to take on my first trail 1/2 marathon in Moab. It’s been special to fall into such a fun, supportive local community. And I highly recommend adding Moab to your running bucket list, the unique landscape and stunning views were amazing. It even makes up for running through all the sand 😂 Figuring out how to trust myself and the process in the challenging middle sections of 1.5-2 hour races is something I look forward to doing more of next year! (W/thoughts like “ok 50 minutes down. 1 hour to go…1 hour?!” and lots of fluctuations between “this is incredible…this is miserable!” or “Wow look at that view! Don’t look!” fellow trail runners, tell me I’m not alone in these types of thoughts haha…)

One last race up next, back to some 5k cross country at Colleen De Reuck XC Classic and then a break to recharge before indoor track 💪

We want to thank everyone who came out and ran with us for the 2017 Grand Blue Mile. Whether you walked in the recreational division, ran in the competitive division or were one of the elite athletes, thank you for making this year's race completely unforgettable! Over 2,500 runners and walkers came out to take a step towards a healthier life. More than 35 elite milers from across the country traveled to Des Moines to vie for a national title and a share of the USATF 1 Mile Road Championships prize purse. Clayton Murphy finished on top out of the 19 men’s competitors, setting a new record with a sub-4-minute finish time of 3:59.96. Katie Mackey finished first in the group of 16 women runners, with a finish time of 4:37.00. Additional results from the 8th Annual Grand Blue Mile are available at OnlineRaceResults.com.
